Burung kicau (Songbirds)
Gray-headed Woodpecker
Picus canus
- tidak umum
- 48 km/h
- Risiko rendah
A quiet ghost of the oak woods — softer than its green cousins, with a clean gray face and a single bright spark of red on the crown. Pairs answer each other across the canopy in slow, descending whistles.
- Populasi
- European population estimated at 180,000-320,000 breeding pairs; no summary population figure exists for the much larger Asian portion of the range, so a global total cannot be quantified but is considered large
- Habitat
- Deciduous and mixed forests, especially old-growth stands with a high proportion of dead/decaying trees, riparian woodland, and forest edges; also orchards and parkland in parts of its range
- Fakta menarik
- Unlike most woodpeckers, the Grey-headed Woodpecker feeds heavily on ants that it forages for on the ground, hopping along forest floors and clearings to probe ant nests rather than drilling into wood; it shows reduced ant specialization compared to the closely related European Green Woodpecker, allowing the two species to nest within about 100 meters of each other.
- Sebaran
- Widespread across central, northern, and eastern Europe through the Palearctic to the Pacific coast, Sakhalin, and Hokkaido, with southern range limits in the Himalaya and the Malay Peninsula; absent from the British Isles, Iberian Peninsula, and North German Plain
- Makanan
- Primarily ants (especially Formica, Lasius, and Myrmica/Myrmicinae species) and their larvae/pupae, comprising up to ~90% of diet along with termites; also caterpillars, beetle larvae, other insects, and seasonally berries and other plant matter
