Pink-headed Duck
Rhodonessa caryophyllacea
- selestial
- 90 km/h
- Kritis
A duck the color of a rose, last seen in a swamp in 1949 and never reliably seen again. Every report since has turned to mist.
- Populasi
- 0–49 mature individuals; widely treated as possibly/functionally extinct — no confirmed wild sighting since mid-1930s (last credible record June 1935, Bhagownie, Darbhanga district, Bihar), last captive birds died out in the 1940s
- Habitat
- Overgrown still-water pools, marshes, and reed-fringed jheels in lowland floodplain forest and tall grassland, especially seasonally-flooded Gangetic-plain wetlands; used lagoons near large rivers in winter
- Fakta menarik
- The male's vivid pink head and neck contrasting with a chocolate-brown body made it one of the most distinctive-looking ducks ever described, and unusually for a duck it laid nearly spherical (rather than oval) eggs.
- Sebaran
- Historically the Gangetic plain of northern India (core breeding range between the Kosi and Ganges rivers in Bihar/West Bengal), extending west to Uttar Pradesh, east to Assam/Manipur, south along India's eastern coast, plus records from Bangladesh, Nepal (one), and northern Myanmar (also collected there in the early 1900s); any surviving population would most plausibly be in remote Myanmar wetlands
- Makanan
- Aquatic vegetation, seeds, and small invertebrates (including molluscs), obtained by dabbling and up-ending, with foraging thought to occur largely at night
- Ukuran
- 0,42 m
- Bentang sayap
- 0,7 m
