In breeding dress the male glows as if the sunset settled on a sparrow — ruby red with constellations of white spots. The Strawberry Finch of old cage-bird catalogues, but better wild.

Populasi
Global population size not quantified; species described as common to locally common across its native range, with an overall stable trend. Introduced populations are small (e.g. <10,000 breeding pairs in Taiwan; 100-10,000 pairs in Japan).
Habitat
Open grasslands, tall grass and reed beds, marshes/swamps, scrub, and cultivated/arable land (e.g. rice paddies and plantations), typically flat lowlands near water; recorded from sea level up to about 2,400 m elevation
Fakta menarik
Both the English name 'avadavat' and the scientific name 'amandava' trace back to Ahmedabad, India, a historic hub from which these birds were exported into the cage-bird trade; in breeding season, males molt into vivid red plumage dotted with white spots, earning the species its alternate name, the Strawberry Finch.
Sebaran
Native to the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh) and mainland Southeast Asia and parts of southern China (Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia), extending into Indonesia (Java) and the Philippines; extent of occurrence ~16.3 million km². Introduced, self-sustaining populations exist in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Egypt, Japan, Taiwan, Puerto Rico, Hawaii/USA, Fiji, Malaysia, Singapore, Bahrain, Iran, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion, and elsewhere, largely via the cage-bird trade
Makanan
Primarily small grass and weed seeds; also feeds opportunistically on insects such as termites, especially when provisioning nestlings
