Burung hantu (Owls)

Ryukyu Scops-Owl

Otus elegans

  • epik
  • 65 km/h
  • Hampir terancam

An island sprite of warm subtropical nights, calling a soft two-note 'koh-hoh' from fig branches above sleeping villages.

Populasi
Global population not precisely quantified; roughly 10,000-100,000 breeding pairs estimated in Japan and up to ~100,000 breeding pairs in Taiwan (only ~150-230 individuals on Lanyu Island specifically), suspected to be slowly decreasing due to habitat loss
Habitat
Tropical and subtropical evergreen forest, from lowlands into mountainous terrain; nests in natural tree cavities in large trees (trunk diameter >38 cm, especially Pometia pinnata), as it cannot excavate its own holes
Fakta menarik
Because its beak cannot excavate wood, the Ryukyu Scops-Owl depends entirely on naturally occurring cavities in large old-growth trees (trunk diameter over 38 cm, notably Pometia pinnata) for nesting, making it especially vulnerable to logging of mature forest.
Sebaran
Resident on small islands of the Nansei Shoto (Ryukyu) and Daito island groups of southern Japan, Lanyu (Orchid Island) off southeastern Taiwan, and the Batanes and Babuyan Islands off northern Luzon, Philippines
Makanan
Mainly large invertebrates such as katydids, moths, millipedes, and spiders, with occasional small vertebrates like geckos, lizards, and small birds (e.g. Japanese white-eye)
Ukuran
0,22 m
Bentang sayap
0,5 m
Masa hidup
3,3 tahun
