- Wooded swamps, shallow lakes, sluggish streams, overgrown beaver ponds, and wood-fringed freshwater marshes; nests in tree cavities (natural holes 2-60 ft high, entrance as small as 4 inches across) or nest boxes near water

- Wood Duck ducklings leave the tree-cavity nest by jumping/climbing out of the entrance (using clawed feet) about a day after hatching — nests can be up to 60 feet high — bouncing off water or soft leaf litter unharmed on their way to join their mother.
