Greater Flamingo
Phoenicopterus roseus
- legendaris
- 72 km/h
- Risiko rendah
The pale pink giant of South Asian salt flats, wading in slow synchronized armies through water it filters with its head upside down. A whole wetland in one silhouette.
- Populasi
- approximately 550,000-680,000 mature individuals globally (Palearctic, SW/South Asian, and sub-Saharan African populations combined), trend increasing
- Habitat
- Shallow saline and alkaline wetlands — saline lagoons, salt pans, large saline/alkaline lakes, mudflats, and coastal estuaries, typically less than ~1 m deep; nests on mudflats or islands within these waterbodies
- Fakta menarik
- The Greater Flamingo feeds with its head held upside-down underwater, using a specially hinged upper jaw to filter tiny organisms from the mud — and its pink plumage comes entirely from carotenoid pigments in the algae and crustaceans it eats, not from any pigment of its own.
- Sebaran
- Widespread across the Old World: West Africa eastward through the Mediterranean and Middle East to South and Central Asia, and throughout sub-Saharan Africa; breeding colonies reach roughly 50°N in Kazakhstan; partially migratory/nomadic depending on water levels and food
- Makanan
- Filter feeder — small crustaceans (including brine shrimp), aquatic insect larvae (e.g. chironomids), molluscs, seeds, blue-green algae, and diatoms, strained from mud and water using its specialized bent bill
- Ukuran
- 1,3 m
- Bentang sayap
- 1,55 m
- Masa hidup
- 25 tahun
